Toddler Growth: What to Expect
Between ages 1 and 5, growth slows compared to the rapid pace of infancy but remains steady. The average toddler:
- Gains about 2–3 kg (4.4–6.6 lb) per year
- Grows about 7–8 cm (2.8–3.1 in) in height per year
- Shows slower head circumference growth (brain growth continues)
By age 2, most children have settled into their "growth channel" and will follow it consistently through childhood.
When to Be Concerned
- Crossover of percentiles: Dropping or crossing more than 2 major percentile lines warrants evaluation
- Plateau: No growth in height over 3–6 months needs assessment
- Weight loss: Any weight loss in a toddler (beyond minor illness) should be evaluated
Remember: The growth chart percentile is less important than whether your child is following their own curve consistently.
