What Is MUAC?
MUAC (Mid-Upper Arm Circumference) is a simple anthropometric measurement used globally to screen for acute malnutrition. It requires only a measuring tape and takes seconds to perform, making it ideal for community health workers and resource-limited settings.
MUAC is preferred over weight-for-height in many screening programs because it is easier to measure, requires no calculations or charts, and is less affected by dehydration or edema.
WHO MUAC Thresholds (6–60 months)
| MUAC Value | Classification | Action |
|---|---|---|
| < 11.5 cm | Severe Acute Malnutrition (SAM) | Immediate referral to hospital or therapeutic feeding program |
| 11.5 – 12.4 cm | Moderate Acute Malnutrition (MAM) | Supplemental feeding program, regular monitoring |
| 12.5 – 13.4 cm | At risk | Monitor closely, nutrition counseling |
| ≥ 13.5 cm | Normal | Continue routine monitoring |
How to Measure MUAC Correctly
- Find the midpoint between the shoulder (acromion) and the tip of the elbow (olecranon) on the left arm
- With the arm relaxed and hanging at the side, wrap the MUAC tape around the arm at the midpoint
- The tape should be snug but not tight — you should be able to slide one finger under it
- Read to the nearest 0.1 cm
