Child Growth Concerns — When to Call the Doctor

Most growth charts are fine, and most worries are unnecessary. These are the specific patterns that do deserve a call — so the rest can stay calm.

Crossing lines sharply

A weight or length that crosses several percentile bands downward over a short time — for example from the 50th to the 5th within months — is worth a conversation.

A plateau that lasts

Growth that stays flat across two or more checkups, or head circumference that stops growing in the first two years, deserves attention.

Symptoms that change the story

Weight loss with feeding difficulty, fever, or unusual sleepiness changes the picture. Growth plus symptoms gets a faster call than growth alone.

Reassurance first

Before worrying, know that single readings and slow weeks are normal. Talk to your pediatrician about the curve, not the one number that scared you.
